River Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Teo · Mora · Piscu · Rojas · Sánchez · Ponzio/Kranevitter · Vangioni · Funes Mori · Maidana · Mercado · BaroveroRiver plays with a heavy presence in the middle of the pitch through a 2-6-2 formation. This lineup is built to dominate the center and overwhelm opponents with sheer numbers. The goal is to control the game by packing the middle zones to win the ball and dictate play.
Barovero stays between the posts to manage the defensive line. Funes Mori and Maidana act as the two central defenders in a narrow defensive block. Because there are only two at the back, they must be ready to step up and cover large spaces. Maidana provides strength in the air while Funes Mori covers behind the line. The unit must stay compact to prevent runners from breaking through the two defenders.
The midfield is where River Plate exerts its most influence. Vangioni and Mercado act as the deep pivots to shield the defense. Ponzio and Kranevitter sit in the center to win the second ball and protect the zone in front of the back line. Sánchez and Rojas operate in the half-spaces to drive forward with the ball and link the play. Piscu plays as an attacking ten, finding pockets of space to play through the lines. This unit connects the defense to the attack by recycling possession and pressing aggressively.
In the final third, the team uses two forwards in a partnership with Mora and Teo leading the line. They work together to press the opposition back line and pin the last defender. Piscu acts as a second striker in the hole to support them. The attack relies on the midfield to feed them through quick passes or to find them in tight spaces. Mora and Teo move to create runs in behind or to hold up the ball for others.
This formation offers significant numerical superiority in midfield. By packing players into the center, River can easily squeeze the space and intercept passes. Coordinated waves of high pressing offer another key advantage. Such intensity makes it very hard for the opponent to build out from the back or find a way through the middle.
The 2-6-2 lineup is designed to suffocate opponents through central dominance. It is best suited for games where the goal is to pin the opposition back and control the tempo through the middle.
