Starting Lineup

Prass · Danso · Lienhart · Laimer · Schlager · Seiwald · Arnautovic · Baumgartner · Sabitzer · R. Schmid · Lucic

Austria relies on a high press and verticality within a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup aims to win the ball high up the pitch to catch the opposition out of position. The goal is to dominate the central areas and drive straight toward the goal through quick transitions.

Lucic stays in goal to command the area. The back line consists of a narrow pair of central defenders, Danso and Lienhart, who play in a high line. Danso uses his aerial strength to win headers and clear the lines, while Lienhart works to cover the space behind when the team pushes up. The defensive unit must remain compact to prevent the opposition from playing through the lines.

A five man midfield takes control of the center of the pitch. Laimer uses his pressing intensity to win the ball, while Prass operates as part of a double pivot to shield the defense. Schlager and Seiwald push into the half spaces to connect the lines, with Seiwald looking to carry the ball forward. Sabitzer plays as an attacking ten, using his passing range to play through the lines. This group works to compress the midfield and deny the turn to opposition players.

Three attackers sit at the top of the lineup. Arnautovic acts as a target man with significant aerial strength to hold up the ball and lay it off to the midfielders. Baumgartner and R. Schmid act as wide attackers, with Baumgartner often cutting inside to increase the central presence. R. Schmid looks to spread wide to provide width and cross on the run. The front three press from the front to force a long ball and win the second ball.

A major tactical advantage is the numerical superiority in the middle. With five players in the center, Austria can easily win the second ball and control the game. The ability to press in coordinated waves allows the team to squeeze the space and win it back high up the pitch. The team can also switch play quickly to isolate wide players in one on one situations.

This 2-5-3 formation is built for high intensity and aggressive pressing. It is best suited for matches against teams that attempt to play short from the back.
