Coritiba Football Formation
Starting Lineup
GOMES · HERALDO · ANDRÉ · MARILDO · ALMIR · DIDA · TOBY · LELA · ÍNDIO · ÉDSON · RAFAELCoritiba looks to overwhelm opponents with a vertical and direct style of play. This high energy system relies on a 4-2-4 formation to push numbers forward and hunt for goals. The lineup aims to win the ball high up the pitch and strike quickly before the opposition can settle.
Rafael sits between the posts to organize the back line. The defense functions as a flat back four where André acts as the right back to provide width and Dida operates as the left back to support the flank. In the center, Gomes and Heraldo work together to defend the box and win the second ball. Gomes and Heraldo must stay disciplined to cover the space when the full backs push forward, ensuring the team does not get caught on the break.
The midfield consists of a double pivot designed to manage the transition from defense to attack. Marildo and Almir operate in the center to protect the back four and recycle possession. Marildo and Almir need to be ready to intercept passes and quickly find the front four. Their main job is to shield the defense and act as a bridge, allowing the team to move from a defensive stance into a heavy attacking phase.
The attack is built around four players who stretch the defense wide and deep. Lela and Édsom play as wide wingers on the right and left, looking to get to the byline and whip it in for the center forwards. Toby and Índio operate as a two-man strike partnership in the center. Toby and Índio focus on making runs in behind and using their presence to pin the last defender, while the wingers look to isolate one on one situations against the opposition full backs.
Coritiba gains a massive advantage through their ability to press high in coordinated waves. By putting four players on the opposition back line, they can force a long ball and win the ball back through the work of Marildo and Almir. This formation also allows for wide overloads when André and Dida push up to overlap the wingers, creating much more room for Lela and Édsom to work.
This 4-2-4 lineup is built for teams that want to dominate through direct attacking and high pressure. It is most effective against opponents who struggle to play out from the back or cannot handle constant pressure in their own half.
