Starting Lineup

GIMENEZ · RAFAEL LEÁO · C. PULISIC · S. TONALI · REIJNDERS · R. DE PAUL · THEO H. · K. WALKER · PAVLOVIC · M. THIAW · MAIGNAN

Milan aims to win the ball back high up the pitch and strike quickly through wide areas using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup relies on a heavy press and fast transitions to catch the opposition out of position. The team looks to control the game by squeezing the space in the middle and using the wings to stretch the defence.

MAIGNAN acts as the first line of defense in goal, often playing out from the back to start attacks. The defensive unit operates in a back five where M. THIAW and PAVLOVIC act as the central defenders, with S. TONALI playing as a third center back to help defend zonally. THEO H. operates as an attacking wing back on the left, looking to push high and overlap, while K. WALKER covers the right side as a defensive wing back to provide balance. This unit is built to hold a compact shape and protect the central zones when the team is out of possession.

The midfield functions as a double pivot to provide stability between the lines. REIJNDERS works to connect the defense and attack, often dropping deep to receive the ball and recycle possession. Beside him, R. DE PAUL drives forward with the ball to link the middle third to the final third. They must work hard to cover the gaps left by the wing backs and press aggressively to win the second ball in the center of the park.

Milan utilizes three attackers across the front to pin the last defender. GIMENEZ operates as a lone striker, looking to hold up the ball and play a one-two with his teammates. RAFAEL LEÁO plays as an inverted winger on the left, using his dribbling style to cut inside and create goalscoring chances. On the right, C. PULISIC plays as an inverted winger who also looks to get to the byline and whip it in for the striker. The front three press the opposition back line constantly to force a long ball.

This formation offers Milan the advantage of wide overloads when THEO H. joins the attack. The presence of three central defenders provides compactness when defending against teams that play with two strikers. Milan can also exploit speed of transition by using the movement of LEÁO and PULISIC to hit in behind on the transition.

The 5-2-3 formation provides a strong defensive base while allowing for rapid attacking bursts through the flanks. It is best suited for games against dominant teams where Milan needs to sit deep and counter at pace.
