Starting Lineup

Wolves focus on a vertical and direct style of football through a 4-4-2 formation. This lineup is built to hit the opposition quickly once the ball is won, looking to exploit space behind the defensive line. The team relies on narrow banks of players to stay compact before looking to expand the pitch in transition.

Williams guards the goal as the foundation of the defensive unit. The back line works as a flat back four, with Palmer at right back and Parkin at left back. Wright and Cullis occupy the central roles, where they must hold the line and defend zonally to prevent through balls. Palmer and Parkin are expected to support the flanks, while Wright and Cullis focus on winning the second ball and covering for each other when the team plays a high line.

The midfield operates as a central pairing with Flowers and Slater sitting in the middle. This duo works to shield the defence and win the ball back in a mid-block. Flowers and Slater look to drive forward with the ball to connect the lines. On the edges, Hancocks and Mullen operate as wide midfielders. Hancocks stays wide to provide width on the right, while Mullen tracks back to help Parkin when defending deep. The midfield unit works to squeeze the space between the lines and prevent the opposition from playing through the middle.

Wolves employ two forwards in a partnership to lead the line. Dougan and Bull act as the primary attacking threat, often working in combinations to pull defenders out of position. Dougan plays as the lead striker to find the feet of the striker, while Bull looks to make runs in behind to stretch the defence. The team uses the wide presence of Hancocks and Mullen to create crossing opportunities. When the ball is won high up the pitch, the forwards press the opposition back line to force a long ball.

This 4-4-2 formation provides significant tactical advantages, particularly in terms of compactness when defending in a mid-block. The presence of Flowers and Slater allows for numerical superiority in the center of the pitch against many single pivot systems. Additionally, the team can use the speed of transition to catch opponents out of position.
