PSV Football Formation
Starting Lineup
KIEFT · GILLHAUS · LERBY · LINSKENS · VANENBURG · GERETS · KOEMAN · NIELSEN · HEINTZE · VAN BREUKELEN · VAN AERLEPSV looks to play a highly vertical style of football using a 3-3-4 formation. This lineup aims to overwhelm the opposition through sheer numbers in the attacking third and rapid transitions. By committing many players forward, the team focuses on a high press to win the ball high up the pitch and force mistakes near the opponent's goal.
VAN BREUKELEN starts in goal to organize the defensive unit. The back line consists of a back three with NIELSEN on the left, KOEMAN in the center, and VAN AERLE on the right. KOEMAN acts as the central figure to sweep behind the line and command the area, while NIELSEN and VAN AERLE provide width within the three man defense to cover the channels. This unit functions to maintain a high line to squeeze the space between the lines.
The midfield operates as a three man midfield with a carrier. LINSKENS works in the middle to connect the defensive and attacking lines, often dropping to receive the ball from the defenders. On either side, GERETS and HEINTZE occupy the half spaces to drive forward with the ball and support the attack. These players must be ready to track back and cover the wide areas when the team loses possession to avoid being caught on the break.
The attack is built around two forwards in a partnership with GILLHAUS and KIEFT acting as the central presence. They work together to hold up the ball and battle with central defenders. Supporting them are two wide wingers, LERBY on the left and VANENBURG on the right, who stay wide to stretch the defence. These attackers aim to make runs in behind or arrive late into the box to finish crosses delivered from the flanks.
This formation offers significant tactical advantages through its ability to press high in coordinated waves. By having four players upfront, PSV can pin the last defender and disrupt the opponent's build up play. The presence of three central midfielders against a standard pairing allows for numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch, which helps the team recycle possession and control the tempo during attacks.
PSV relies on an aggressive and direct attacking identity to break down opponents. This formation is best suited for games where the team needs to overwhelm a defensive low block through constant pressure.
