Belgrano Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Vicentini · Troilo · Meriano · Grillo · Quignón · Zelarayán · Jara · Velázquez · Sánchez · G. Metili · HerediaBelgrano focuses on a defensive, counter attacking style of play with a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and wait for the opposition to commit players forward before hitting them on the transition.
Vicentini stays between the posts to guard the goal. The defensive unit operates with a back five that can move into a narrow defensive block. Quignón and Heredia act as the central defenders, with Heredia covering the right side and Quignón holding the left. Grillo sits in the middle of the back three to win the header and provide cover. Meriano plays as an attacking wing back on the left to help the defense and push up, while Troilo works the right flank as a wing back. They aim to protect the central area and force the opponent to play wide.
A flat four man midfield occupies the center of the pitch. G. Metili works as the player to shield the defense, sitting low to win the second ball. Zelarayán acts as the driver in the central pairing, looking to carry the ball forward and connect the defensive and attacking lines. Sánchez and Velázquez occupy the wide areas to help the wing backs and squeeze the space in the middle. This midfield group works to win the ball back and immediately find the feet of the striker.
The team uses Jara as a lone striker to lead the front line. Jara must hold up the ball and wait for support to arrive in tight spaces. The attack is built through quick transitions where Velázquez and Sánchez look to spread wide and hit in behind. Meriano and Troilo push up to provide width and aim to whip it in from the wings. The movement is designed to create runs in behind and allow for link-up play between the lines.
The tactical advantages of this formation include extreme compactness when defending to deny the turn and stop through balls. Belgrano uses the width of the wing backs to create overloads when they move into the final third. They also rely on the speed of transition to catch the opponent out of position.
This 5-4-1 formation provides a solid foundation for a team that prefers to sit deep. It is best suited for matches against possession heavy sides that leave space behind their high line.
