Starting Lineup

River focuses on being defensively solid by sitting deep and waiting for the right moment to strike. The team uses a 5-4-1 formation to maintain a compact block when they do not have the ball. This lineup is built to absorb pressure and use the width of the pitch when they transition into attack.

Armani guards the goal while the defensive unit maintains a narrow defensive block. Martínez Quarta acts as the central anchor to organize the line, supported by Pezzella who provides aerial strength in the box. Díaz operates as the left centre back to cover the space behind the wing back. Acuña plays as an attacking wing back on the left to provide width, while Montiel works as a defensive wing back on the right to balance the back five.

The midfield works to protect the central areas using a four man line. Meza and Simón form a central pairing to shield the defence and win the second ball. Galoppo acts as a carrier to move the team through the thirds, while Colidio plays as an attacking ten behind the striker. Colidio looks to find pockets of space between the opposition lines to link the midfield to the attack.

River relies on Borja as a lone striker to lead the line. Borja is tasked to hold up the ball and wait for support from the advancing midfielders. The attack is built through wide areas where Acuña and Montiel can cross the ball into the box. Colidio and Borja combine in tight spaces to try and split the defence with a through ball, often looking for runs in behind the opposition back line.

A major advantage of this River lineup is the compactness when defending, making it very hard for opponents to find gaps. The formation also allows for wide overloads when Montiel and Acuña push forward to join the attacking phase. This creates a high number of passing lanes for the midfielders to exploit during transitions.
