Hoffenheim Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Kaderabek · Jurasek · Hranac · Kabak · Stach · Samassekou · M. Berisha · Kramaric · Prass · Hlozek · BaumannAggressive pressing and verticality define the way Hoffenheim plays using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup focuses on squeezing the pitch to win the ball back high up the pitch. It is a system built to dominate possession and drive the ball forward once the ball is recovered.
Baumann guards the goal as the last line of defense. The back line consists of a central pair with Kabak and Hranac playing in a high line. These two central defenders must be ready to step up to set the offside trap or cover for the midfield. They need to be dominant in the air to clear the lines when the opposition goes direct. The defensive unit must work in total unison to avoid being caught by runs in behind.
The midfield is composed of five players who control the center of the pitch. Jurasek and Kaderabek form a double pivot to shield the defense and protect the two center backs. Samassekou and Stach act as the link between the defense and attack, often moving into the half-spaces to carry the ball forward. Kramaric operates as an attacking ten behind the striker, using his passing range to find teammates and play through the lines. This group works to compress the midfield and ensure they win the second ball constantly.
The attacking front three is designed to stretch the defense and create chaos. Hlozek and Prass play as wide attackers who look to cut inside and create chances in tight spaces. M. Berisha acts as a pressing centre-forward, working to pin the last defender and hold up the ball during build up. Movements focus on creating runs in behind or allowing the midfielders to arrive late into the box. Exploiting the channels to break quickly is a key goal.
Significant tactical advantages are found in the numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch. By packing the center, Hoffenheim can easily recycle possession and prevent the opponent from finding space. Coordination allows the team to press high in coordinated waves, using the front line to trigger a press. High intensity makes it very difficult for the opposition to play out from the back comfortably.
The 2-5-3 formation is a bold system intended to suffocate the opposition in their own half. This lineup is best suited for games where the team needs to break down a side that is sitting deep in a low block.
