Zenit seeks to control the middle of the pitch and overwhelm opponents with a heavy central presence through a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to play with a high volume of passing in the middle thirds and use aggressive numbers in the final third to squeeze the play. The team prioritizes a high block to win the ball back quickly and drive the game forward with directness.

Igor Malafeev guards the goal while the defensive unit relies on a very narrow back two. Martin Skrtel and Garay form a central pair tasked with defending large amounts of space behind them. Skrtel uses his aerial strength to defend set pieces and crosses while Garay acts as a ball playing defender to start attacks. This small defensive unit must be extremely disciplined to cover the width of the pitch when the opposition attacks the flanks.

The midfield is the engine room of Zenit and works as a five man block to dominate the center. Hubocan and Ricksen act as a double pivot to shield the two central defenders and intercept passes. Axel Witsel sits slightly further forward to connect the defense and attack, using his passing range to move the ball. Lovren operates in the half spaces to provide extra coverage, while Kokorin plays as an attacking ten to find pockets of space.

The attacking front three focuses on creating central overload scenarios. Rondon acts as the target man to hold up the ball and win headers, allowing others to join the play. Hulk operates as an inverted winger on the right, known for his powerful dribbling and ability to cut inside to shoot. Kezman plays on the left to provide width and service, creating a frontline that can combine in tight spaces or exploit runners in behind.

One major advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in the midfield, which allows the team to control possession and recycle the ball. The presence of Kokorin and Witsel behind Rondon creates constant passing options to break the line. Another strength is the ability to use the wide players like Hulk and Kezman to stretch the defense before playing through the middle.

This 2-5-3 formation is designed for teams that want to dominate the ball and pin the opposition in their own half. It is best suited for matches against opponents that sit in a low block and can be broken down by central combinations.
