PSG focuses on an aggressive, high press to win the ball back high up the pitch, utilizing a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup aims to dominate the central areas and overwhelm opponents with constant pressure in the attacking third. By pushing numbers forward, the team seeks to control the game through direct attacking actions and rapid ball recovery.

The defensive work begins with the goalkeeper, who must remain alert to long balls while the back line remains high. POCHETTINO and HEINZE form a narrow duo of central defenders who must be ready to step up to trigger a press or cover space behind the midfield. This two man back line relies on extreme compactness to avoid being split by through balls. Because the formation lacks full backs, POCHETTINO and HEINZE must be dominant in the air and quick to intercept passes to prevent the opposition from finding space between the lines.

In the middle of the pitch, a five man unit provides the engine for the team. SORIN and VAMPETA operate as a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. LOIK CANA works in the half spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines, while ARTETA provides extra support to compress the midfield. R10 plays as the attacking ten behind the striker, looking to receive on the half turn and play through the lines. This dense midfield allows PSG to win the second ball and immediately transition into attack.

The front line consists of three attackers designed to stretch the defense. ANELKA plays as an inverted winger on the right to cut inside, while LAURENT ROBERT occupies the left wing to provide width. CHULAPA/CRISTIAN acts as the central striker to lead the press from the front and find the feet of the striker in tight spaces. The team attacks in combinations, using the movement of the wingers to create runs in behind or to allow R10 to arrive late into the box.

This lineup offers significant numerical superiority in midfield, making it very difficult for opponents to build play through the center. The ability to press in coordinated waves allows PSG to squeeze the space and force a long ball from the opposition. Furthermore, the presence of three advanced players allows the team to pin the last defender and create isolated one on one situations for the wide attackers.

The 2-5-3 formation is a high risk, high reward system centered on aggressive ball winning and central dominance. It is best suited for games where the team needs to overwhelm a low block or exploit a side that struggles with high intensity pressing.
