PSG look to overwhelm opponents with a heavy offensive presence through a 2-4-4 formation. This lineup is built to play a high pressing game where the team seeks to win the ball back high up the pitch. By committing so many players forward, the club aims to pin the opposition in their own half and create constant attacking pressure through sheer numbers.

In goal, TRAPP/SIRIGU acts as the last line of defense. The defensive unit is extremely thin with only a back two consisting of ALEX/DAVID LUIZ and THIAGO SILVA/MARQUINHOS. These central defenders must act as ball playing defenders who can cover large amounts of space behind them. Because there are no full backs, these two must be dominant in the air and quick to intercept any long balls played over the top. The defensive unit operates with a high line, requiring them to step up to squeeze the space between the lines.

The midfield is a busy engine room designed to control the center of the pitch. A four man block featuring MAXWELL/KIMPBEMPE and VD WIEL alongside VERATTI/RABIOT and MATUIDI/PASTORE works to connect the defense to the attack. VERATTI/RABIOT functions as a deep lying playmaker to recycle possession, while MATUIDI/PASTORE acts as an attacking ten to push into the half spaces. The midfield relies on these players to carry the ball forward and ensure the ball moves quickly from the back to the front four.

The attacking line is incredibly potent with four players looking to score. LAVEZZI stays wide on the left to stretch the defense, while CAVANI/DI MARIA operates on the right to cut inside. ZLATAN and LUCAS/MENEZ form a central partnership where ZLATAN can hold up the ball and find the feet of the others. This front four is designed to attack in combinations, using quick passes to split the defense with a through ball or movement to create runs in behind.

One major tactical strength of this PSG lineup is the ability to create wide overloads and numerical superiority in the final third. By having four dedicated attackers, the team can pin the last defender and isolate wide players in one on one situations. Another advantage is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it very difficult for the opposition to build play from their own goalkeeper.

This heavy attacking formation is designed to dominate games through high intensity and goal scoring threats. It is best suited for situations where the team needs to chase a result against a side that sits deep.
