Isla (22) · Cortés (1) · Saldivia (4) · Wiemberg (21) · Méndez (5) · Pavez (8) · Vidal (23) · Pizarro (34) · Correa (9) · Cepeda (32) · Aquino (10)

Colo Colo aims to control the middle of the pitch and win the ball back high up the pitch using a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup relies on a heavy midfield presence to dominate games through grit and ball retention. The goal is to use the strength of the central players to dictate the tempo while remaining compact when the team does not have the ball.

Cortés guards the goal while the defensive unit sits in a standard flat back four. Saldivia and Méndez act as the central defenders, with Méndez providing physical presence and Saldivia looking to cover the space behind him. Isla operates as a right back to provide width, while Wiemberg covers the left side. This defensive unit works to hold the line and squeeze the space when the opposition tries to play through the thirds.

A double pivot provides the foundation for the midfield with Pavez and Pizarro sitting in front of the back four. Pavez works to shield the defence, while Pizarro uses his passing range to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Ahead of them, Cepeda acts as a central engine to win the second ball and drive forward. Aquino and Vidal play in the half spaces, with Vidal using his experience to arrive late into the box and Aquino looking to press aggressively to win the ball high.

The attacking plan revolves around a lone striker, Correa, who must hold up the ball to allow the midfielders to join the play. Correa acts as a pressing centre forward to disrupt the opposition back line. The width comes from the midfielders pushing higher, while Aquino and Vidal look to cut inside to create numerical superiority in central areas. The team builds attacks by playing short from the back and using the technical skill of the midfield to find the feet of the striker.

This formation offers Colo Colo great compactness when defending in a mid-block. The presence of five midfielders makes it very hard for opponents to play through the middle. Additionally, the team can use the speed of transition to catch opponents out when Vidal or Aquino find space behind the opposition midfield.

Colo Colo uses this 4-5-1 to create a hard unit that is difficult to break down centrally. This lineup is best suited for games against teams that want to dominate possession, allowing the midfield to sit deep and strike on the break.
