Fortaleza aims to dominate the central zones through heavy congestion and high volume of players in the middle of the pitch. This 2-6-2 formation focuses on overwhelming the opposition through a massive midfield presence. The lineup is built to control the rhythm of the game and win the second ball by occupying almost every passing lane in the center.

Santos sits between the posts to guard the goal as the lone man in the defensive unit. Behind him, the back line consists of a narrow pairing with Lima/Angelim and David Luiz acting as the central defenders. David Luiz uses his experience to lead the line and step up to intercept passes, while Lima/Angelim provides cover. This duo must remain extremely disciplined because they operate without wide full backs, meaning they often have to defend large amounts of space if the opposition breaks the lines.

The midfield is the engine room of Fortaleza and occupies a massive area of the pitch. A trio of defensive midfielders consisting of Zé Welisson, Richarlison, and Cajueiro sits deep to shield the two defenders. Zé Welisson and Richarlison work to protect the center, while Cajueiro helps recycle possession and link the back to the attack. Ahead of them, three attacking midfielders in Lucas Lima/Cleison, Diogo Barbosa, and Zé Love push into the half-spaces to find pockets of space. These players work to drive forward with the ball and provide support for the forwards, creating a wall of players that is very hard to bypass.

The attacking front line relies on two forwards to finish the chances created by the massive midfield block. Carlinhos Bala and Marcelinho/Nicacio operate as the two attackers, often looking to find space between the opposition defenders. They do not stay isolated but rather function through link-up play with the attacking midfielders. The team builds attacks through short passes from the midfield, looking to pull the defense out of position before hitting in behind on the transition.

One major advantage for Fortaleza is the numerical superiority in midfield which allows them to squeeze the space in the center of the park. This heavy presence makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle. Another strength is the ability to win the second ball due to the sheer number of players positioned to compete for every loose ball. This setup allows the team to maintain high levels of possession and keep the ball in the opponent half.
