Fortaleza looks to control the center of the pitch through a massive accumulation of bodies in a 2-6-2 formation. This lineup focuses on overwhelming the middle of the park to dominate the ball and squeeze the opposition into very small areas. It is a formation built to play high up the pitch with an emphasis on central density and short passing combinations.

Santos acts as the lone man at the back to start the play. The defensive line consists of a back two with David Luiz and Lima/Angelim acting as the primary central defenders. David Luiz uses his passing range to distribute the ball while Lima/Angelim provides cover. Because there are only two defenders, this unit must remain very compact to avoid being caught out by long balls.

The midfield is the engine room for Fortaleza, operating with a massive six man group. Zé Welisson, Richarlysson, and Cajueiro form a deep trio to shield the defense and win the second ball. Ahead of them, Lucas Lima/Cleison, Diogo Barbosa, and Zé Love operate in the half spaces to create chances. This group connects the defense to the attack by recycling possession and playing through the lines.

The attack features two forwards, Carlinhos Bala and Marcelinho/Nicacio, who work as a partnership. They do not stay isolated but instead look to link up play between the lines and receive service from the crowded midfield. Carlinhos Bala looks to exploit space in behind while Marcelinho/Nicacio can drop deep to help move the ball forward. They push the opposition back line high to create room for the midfielders to arrive late into the box.

One major strength for Fortaleza is the numerical superiority in midfield, which makes it very difficult for opponents to hold the ball. The team can also press in a mid-block or high up the pitch by using the six midfielders to trigger a press in waves. This creates a compact shape that is hard to break down once the ball is lost.

This 2-6-2 formation is a high risk, high reward way to play that aims to suffocate the opponent in their own half. It is best suited for games where Fortaleza needs to dominate possession against a team that sits deep in a low block.
