Celta focuses on a direct and vertical style of play through a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to hit teams on the transition and use width to stretch the opposition. The goal is to sit in a mid-block and win the ball back to quickly release the front three.

Guaita operates between the posts to manage the defensive line. The back five uses a central trio consisting of Carlos, Marcos, and Javi to protect the middle of the pitch. Carlos acts as the central defender to anchor the unit, while Javi and Marcos provide cover and win headers. On the flanks, Hugo and Mingueza play as attacking wing backs to provide width and support the defense. Hugo pushes up the left channel to deliver crosses, while Mingueza covers the right side to overlap the winger.

The midfield utilizes a double pivot consisting of Illaix and Beltrán. These two players work to control the center and connect the defensive unit to the attack. Beltrán and Illaix must press aggressively to win the ball high and prevent the opposition from playing through the middle. They are tasked with picking up runners and screening the passing lanes to the opposition attackers. When the team wins possession, one of them often carries the ball forward to start the break.

In the attacking third, Celta employs three attackers to pin the opposition back line. Durán plays as a lone striker, acting as a focal point to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. Aspas operates on the right as an inverted winger, often cutting inside to create chances or shoot. Alfonso occupies the left wing to provide width and stretch the defense. This front three works together to press from the front and create runs in behind the defenders.

This formation provides significant tactical advantages, particularly through the wide overloads created by Hugo and Mingueza. The combination of a back five and a double pivot allows Celta to maintain compactness when defending. This setup also enables high speed of transition when the ball is won in the middle third.

Celta uses this 5-2-3 formation to exploit teams that play with a high line. It is a setup best suited for counter attacking against dominant opponents.
