PAOK Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Kotarski · Baba · Otto · Kedziora · Wieteska · Camara · Meite · Pelkas · Despotov · Brandon Thomas · KonstanteliasPAOK plays a 4-5-1 formation. The tactical identity focuses on being defensively solid and playing on the break. This lineup is built to sit deep in a mid block and use quick transitions to exploit spaces left by the opposition.
Kotarski starts in goal to command the area. The back line functions as a flat back four that stays narrow to deny central penetration. Kedziora and Wieteska serve as the central defenders, with Kedziora being dominant in the air and Wieteska tasked to cover the space behind a high line. Otto plays as an attacking full back to provide width on the right, while Baba works as a defensive wing back to track back and protect the flank. The defensive unit stays compact to force the opponent to play long balls.
The midfield is a five man unit featuring a double pivot. Meite and Camara sit deep to shield the defence and win the second ball. This allows Konstantelias to act as a carrier who can drive forward with the ball and connect the defensive and attacking lines. Pelkas and Despotov operate in the half spaces to create chances. Pelkas looks to receive on the half turn to play through the lines, while Despotov looks to cut inside and find pockets of space.
Brandon Thomas acts as a lone striker at the front. He works to hold up the ball and pin the last defender to create room for the teammates behind him. When the team wins possession, they look to hit in behind on the transition. The attacking players like Pelkas and Despotov will pull wide to stretch the defence or cut inside to combine in tight spaces. The attack is built through quick movement to find the feet of the striker or exploit the gaps in the opposition back line.
A major advantage for PAOK is the ability to press in a mid block using coordinated waves. The double pivot of Meite and Camara provides numerical superiority in the center to stop the opposition from playing through the middle. Additionally, the team can exploit wide overloads when Otto pushes forward to overlap the winger.
This 4-5-1 formation is a disciplined way to control the center of the pitch while remaining difficult to break down. It is best suited for games against teams that dominate possession where the goal is to defend deep and counter at pace.
