Starting Lineup

Oblak · Reinildo · Lenglet · Le Normand · M. Llorente · Samu Lino · Koke · Barrios · Giuliano · Sørloth · J.alvarez

Atlético plays with high intensity and defensive solidity in a 4-4-2. This formation is built to win the ball high up the pitch and use quick transitions to catch opponents off guard. The team aims to stay compact and move as a unit to deny space between the lines.

Oblak guards the goal and organizes the defensive unit. A flat back four consists of Reinildo, Lenglet, Le Normand, and M. Llorente. Reinildo and M. Llorente act as full backs to provide width, while Le Normand and Lenglet occupy the central roles to defend zonally. Le Normand is dominant in the air and helps to clear the lines, while Lenglet works to cover space behind a high line. The defensive unit shifts together to keep the formation narrow and force the opposition wide.

Koke and Barrios anchor the midfield as a central block. This double pivot features Barrios acting to shield the defence and win the second ball. Koke connects the defensive and attacking lines, using his passing range to find teammates in advanced positions. On the flanks, Samu Lino and Giuliano operate as wide midfielders. Samu Lino likes to push up to support the attack, while Giuliano provides width and tracks back to help the defence. This midfield works to squeeze the space in the center.

Up front, Atlético employs two forwards in a partnership consisting of Sørloth and J.alvarez. Sørloth acts as a target man who can hold up the ball and win the header to bring others into play. J.alvarez plays as a pressing centre-forward, constantly looking to press the opposition back line and make runs in behind. The team attacks in combinations, using the wide players to provide service for the strikers. They look to hit in behind on the transition and use the movement of the two forwards to stretch the defence.

This formation offers specific tactical advantages through compactness when defending and speed of transition. By keeping the lines close together, the team makes it difficult for opponents to play through the lines. The ability to win the ball high up the pitch allows the two forwards to immediately attack the opposition. Additionally, the presence of Koke allows the team to recycle possession and switch play quickly to the wide areas.

The 4-4-2 formation provides Atlético with a balanced way to defend deep or press aggressively. This lineup is best suited for facing teams that struggle with high intensity and quick vertical movements.
