Atalanta plays a highly aggressive brand of football built on intense pressing and verticality. The team utilizes a 2-5-3 formation to overwhelm opponents in the middle and final thirds. This lineup aims to win the ball high up the pitch and force mistakes through constant pressure. Every player is expected to move forward together to squeeze the space and maintain a high defensive line.

R. Patrício guards the goal as the last line of defense. The defensive unit sits in a high line with only two central defenders, Hien and Posch, protecting the space behind. Hien and Posch must stay tight and cover large areas of the pitch to prevent runs in behind. They work to intercept passes and win the second ball when the ball is cleared. The defensive unit functions by pressing the goalkeeper and forcing a long ball that the center-backs can contest.

A five-man midfield provides the engine for this formation. de Roon acts as the central anchor to shield the two defenders and pick up runners. Beside him, Pasalic and Zaniolo operate in the half-spaces to link the play. Bellanova and Kolasinac occupy the wide areas to provide width and support the attack. Bellanova can overlap to push the team forward, while Kolasinac works to track back and cover the wide channels. This midfield group works to compress the space and recycle possession quickly to find the feet of the attackers.

The attacking trio stays high to pin the opposition back. Retegui leads the line as the main striker, using his movement to find space or run in behind. Lookman plays on the left, using his dribbling to cut inside and create chances. De Ketelaere occupies the right flank, moving into pockets of space to combine in tight spaces. These three press the opposition back line relentlessly to win it back high up the pitch and create chances in transition.

This formation offers significant tactical advantages through numerical superiority in the middle of the park. By using five midfielders, Atalanta can dominate the center and force opponents to play wide. The lineup also creates wide overloads when Bellanova and Kolasinac push forward to overlap the wingers. This constant pressure and ability to play through the lines makes it very difficult for the opposition to build play from the back.

This 2-5-3 formation is a high-intensity lineup that relies on winning the ball quickly. It is best suited for matches where the team wants to dominate the game and play against a team that sits deep.
