The midfield functions with a single pivot and a variety of runners. Calhanoglu sits deep to shield the defense and acts as a deep lying playmaker with his immense passing range. Barella works in the center to drive forward with the ball and connect the defensive and attacking lines. Zielinski plays in a more advanced role to find pockets of space and create chances. Di Marco and Dumfries act as attacking wing backs, providing constant width by pushing high up the pitch to support the attack.

In the attacking phase, the team relies on a partnership of two forwards. Martinez operates as a mobile striker who can link up play between the lines and hold up the ball. Thuram plays alongside him, often looking to run in behind the defense to exploit space. The wide wing backs, Di Marco and Dumfries, provide the width, allowing the two strikers to stay central and pin the last defender. This creates many combinations in the final third, especially through cutbacks from the byline.

This lineup offers significant tactical advantages, particularly through the control of the central areas. By using a five man midfield when defending, Inter achieves great compactness when defending. The overlapping runs from Di Marco and Dumfries create wide overloads that force the opposition to shift constantly.
