Lecce aims to dominate through an aggressive attacking identity using a 4-2-4. This formation is built to play a high press to win the ball back quickly. The intention is to keep the play in the opposition half and move the ball vertically to exploit gaps.
1 sits between the posts to command the area. The back line operates as a flat back four that can step up to set the offside trap. 5 and 6 serve as the central defenders, with 6 focusing on holding the line while 5 tries to cover the space behind. 2 and 3 are positioned to provide width, often pushing up to overlap the wingers. They must be ready to track back if the ball is lost.
The midfield uses a double pivot consisting of 8 and 4. These two players are responsible for shielding the defense and controlling the tempo. 4 acts as the primary holder to deny the pivot of the opposition, while 8 works to carry the ball forward and progress through the thirds. They must connect the defensive unit to the front line by playing short from the back and then looking to break the line.
Up front, the team utilizes four attackers to stretch the defence. 7 and 11 act as wide wingers who hug the touchline to pull the opposition defenders apart. 7 and 11 will look to cut inside to create space for 2 and 3 to overlap. In the center, 10 and 9 form a striking partnership. 10 often drops into the hole to link play, while 9 stays high to pin the last defender and make runs in behind. This quartet will press from the front to force a long ball.
A major strength for Lecce is the ability to create wide overloads. By having 7 and 11 spread wide, the full backs can push high to overwhelm the opposition. Another strength is the speed of transition. With four players already high, the team can break quickly and hit in behind on the transition before the opposition can regroup.
This 4-2-4 lineup is a high risk and high reward system centered on offensive pressure. It is most effective against opponents that try to play short from the back and struggle with intense pressing.
