Grêmio looks to play a direct and high pressing style of football within a 4-5-1 formation. The lineup focuses on winning the ball back high up the pitch and using quick transitions to catch the opposition out of position. This system relies on a compact block to make it difficult for opponents to play through the middle.
Tiago Volpi starts between the posts to organize the defense. The back line functions as a flat back four with L. Esteves and João Pedro acting as full backs. L. Esteves provides width while João Pedro can overlap to support the attack. In the center, Jemerson and R. Ely act as the central defenders. Jemerson uses his aerial strength to defend crosses, while R. Ely covers space behind the line to keep the defensive unit together.
The midfield is a dense five man unit that sits in a mid block to squeeze the space between the lines. C. Cuéllar, the captain, sits as a single pivot to shield the defense and intercept passes. Beside him, M. Villasanti acts as a carrier to drive forward with the ball. M. Monsalve and C. Pavón operate in the half spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines. F. Cristaldo plays as the most advanced midfielder, looking to arrive late into the box or play through the lines to find the striker.
Grêmio uses a lone striker in M. Braithwaite to lead the line. Braithwaite acts as a target man to hold up the ball and allow the midfielders to join the attack. He presses the opposition back line to force mistakes and long balls. The wide midfielders must work hard to track back and support the full backs while also providing width in the final third. The team builds attacks by spreading wide and using combinations to pull defenders out of position.
One major advantage for Grêmio is the numerical superiority in the midfield which makes it very hard for opponents to control the game. The central trio of C. Cuéllar, M. Villasanti, and F. Cristaldo allows the team to win the second ball and recycle possession quickly. Another strength is the ability to use the speed of transition once M. Braithwaite pins the last defender.
This 4-5-1 formation is built to play a disciplined and reactive style of football. It is best suited for games against teams that dominate possession where Grêmio can sit deep and strike on the break.
