Starting Lineup

Højlund · Biereth · Skov Olsen · Jensen · Hjulmand · Bøving · Kristensen · Kristiansen · Andersen · Christensen · Hermansen

Denmark relies on a high press and rapid verticality in this 2-4-4 formation. This lineup aims to squeeze the space in the middle and use a heavy front line to force errors. The goal is to win the ball high up the pitch and exploit the space behind the opposition defense as quickly as possible.

Hermansen operates in goal to manage the high line. The back line consists of only two central defenders, Christensen and Andersen, who must remain disciplined to avoid being caught out. Christensen and Andersen play as ball playing defenders who need to step up to squeeze the game. Because there are no wide defenders, these two must be ready to cover large areas of the pitch if the opposition switches play.

The midfield is a box with two deep players and two more advanced players. Kristiansen and Kristensen act as a double pivot to shield the two defenders and win the second ball. Kristensen works to protect the center while Kristiansen looks to recycle possession. Ahead of them, Hjulmand and Jensen operate in the half spaces to press aggressively. Hjulmand is tasked to win it back high up the pitch, while Jensen looks to carry the ball forward to link the lines.

In the attacking third, the team uses four forwards to pin the last defender. Biereth and Højlund act as a partnership in the center, with Højlund using his physical presence and pace to run in behind. Skov Olsen and Bøving provide width by hugging the touchline to stretch the defence. Skov Olsen is known for his dribbling style to beat his man, while Bøving looks to deliver crosses. This front four works together to press from the front and create chances through combinations.

Denmark gains a significant advantage through their ability to press high in coordinated waves. The presence of four attackers makes it very difficult for the opponent to play out from the back without making a mistake. Another strength is the numerical superiority in the attacking half, which allows the team to create many chances in transition.

This 2-4-4 formation is built for a high risk, high reward style of play. It is best suited for games where the opponent struggles to play through a heavy press.
