Napoli Football Formation
Starting Lineup
MERET · BUONGIORNO (J.Jesus) · RRAHMANI · SPINAZZOLA (Oliveira) · DI LORENZO · LOBOTKA (Gilmour) · MCTOMINAY (Biling) · ANGUISSA · NERES (Okafor) · LUKAKU (Simeone/Raspadori) · POLITANO (Ngonge)Napoli aims to control the center of the pitch through high volume of play, utilizing a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup seeks to dominate the ball in the middle thirds and create heavy pressure in the final third. By committing so many bodies forward, the team is built to play a very vertical game that breaks lines quickly once the ball is recovered.
Alex Meret sits between the posts to manage the space behind the defense. The back line consists of a narrow pair of central defenders, Buongiorno and Rrahmani, who must act as ball playing defenders to start attacks. Because there are no traditional full backs, these two must step up into midfield or cover wide areas to stop counter attacks. They need to be dominant in the air and quick to intercept runners. The whole defensive unit functions by maintaining a high line to squeeze the space and support the midfield.
The midfield is the engine of this Napoli side, working as a five man unit to control transitions. Lobotka acts as the deep lying playmaker, dropping between the centre backs to receive the ball and recycle possession. Di Lorenzo and Spinazzola operate as defensive midfielders to shield the defense and stop central penetrations. Anguissa and McTominay provide much more offensive energy, with Anguissa looking to drive forward with the ball and McTominay making late runs into the box. This midfield connects the defense to the attack by finding the feet of the attackers or playing through the lines.
The front line operates with three attackers to stretch the opposition defense. Lukaku acts as a target man, holding up the ball to bring others into play and winning the header when crosses arrive. Neres and Politano act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create more central presence, leaving space for the midfielders to exploit. These three press from the front to force a long ball from the opponent. The attack relies on combinations in tight spaces to create runs in behind or isolate opponents in one on one situations on the flanks.
This formation offers significant tactical advantages through numerical superiority in midfield. By having five players in the middle, the team can easily win the second ball and control the tempo of the game. Another strength is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the three forwards and three central midfielders to trap the opponent. This makes it very difficult for teams to play out from the back or find passing lanes through the middle.
Napoli relies on this aggressive 2-5-3 formation to overwhelm opponents in the middle of the park. It is a lineup best suited for games where the team wants to dominate possession against a side that sits deep in a low block.
