Holm plays as a defensive wing back to hold his position on the right, while Lykogiannis provides more width on the left. In the middle, Beukema and Lucumi defend zonally to keep the line high. Beukema uses his aerial strength to win the header during set pieces, while Lucumi works to cover and pick up runners if the line is breached.

A five man midfield block provides the core of the Bologna system. Freuler sits in a single pivot role to shield the defence and recycle possession. Ferguson plays as a ball carrier to drive forward and press aggressively to win the ball back in the middle third. Odgaard acts as the link between the defensive and attacking lines, helping to move the ball through the thirds. Ndoye and Orsolini occupy the spaces between the lines, with Orsolini often looking to move into the half spaces to create passing lanes.

Castro leads the front line as a pressing centre-forward to harass the opposition back line. He works to hold up the ball and find the feet of the teammates arriving from deep. Orsolini and Ndoye provide width, with Orsolini often looking to cut inside or get to the byline to whip it in. Players look to hit in behind on the transition, using quick combinations to exploit gaps. These movements are designed to isolate a one on one wide or create runs in behind the defenders.

One tactical advantage of this formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves to force a long ball. Bologna also finds success through compactness when defending, which makes it very hard for opponents to play through the lines. Central areas can be controlled through numerical superiority to dictate the tempo of the game.
