Celtic Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Trusty · CCV · Johnston · Tierney · Schmeichel · McGregor · Miller · Engels · Kuhn · Jota · KvistgaardenCeltic looks to dominate games through a high press and heavy possession with a 4-3-3. This formation is built to control the rhythm of the match and pin the opposition in their own half. The goal is to win it back high up the pitch to launch immediate attacks.
Schmeichel guards the goal and acts as the first line of build up. The back line operates as a flat back four where Johnston and Tierney act as attacking full backs to provide width. CCV and Trusty play as central defenders, with CCV often stepping into midfield to help move the ball forward while Trusty provides cover. This defensive unit stays compact to squeeze the space between the lines.
The midfield operates as a three man midfield with a carrier in the pivot role. McGregor sits in front of the back four to shield the defence and recycle possession. Engels and Miller work as inverted eights who drive forward with the ball to link the defensive and attacking lines. Engels uses his passing range to find teammates, while Miller presses aggressively to win the ball in the middle third.
Celtic uses three attackers across the front to stretch the defence. Kvistgaarden acts as a pressing centre forward to harass the opposition back line. Jota and Kuhn play as inverted wingers who cut inside to create goal scoring chances. While Kuhn pulls wide to spread the play, Jota looks to find space between the lines to play one-two combinations with the striker. This setup creates many runs in behind and allows for quick transitions.
This lineup offers great numerical superiority in midfield when the full backs push high. The team can also create wide overloads by having Johnston or Tierney overlap the winger. Celtic is very effective at winning the second ball in the attacking third to keep the pressure on.
The Celtic 4-3-3 is a heavy attacking formation designed to suffocate opponents. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to break down a low block through constant pressure.
