Starting Lineup

ALMUNIA/ DIEGO ALVES · RONCAGLIA · MARCOS ALONSO · SYLVINHO · SALGADO · EDU/MAKELELE · BOBAN · LROHN DELI · MICHU · CAPUCHO · DIEGO COSTA

Celta looks to dominate the pitch through an aggressive and vertical attacking style using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to push high up the pitch and overwhelm the opposition in their own half by keeping many bodies forward. The team aims to control the tempo through a crowded middle section while looking to strike quickly once they regain the ball.

Diego Alves starts in goal to manage the back line. The defensive unit consists of a narrow back two with Marcos Alonso and Roncaglia acting as the central defenders. Marcos Alonso operates as a ball playing defender while Roncaglia provides strength to win the header and clear the lines. Because there are only two players in the back, they must step up to set the offside trap and keep the play in front of them to avoid being caught by long balls.

The midfield is the engine of the Celta formation, utilizing a five man unit to control the center. Salgado and Sylvinho act as a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. In front of them, Edu and Lrohn Deli work as inverted eights to connect the lines and drive forward with the ball. Boban plays as an attacking ten behind the striker to find space between the lines and provide the final pass. This five man block helps the team squeeze the space and win it back high up the pitch.

The attacking front three focuses on creating constant pressure on the opposition back line. Capucho plays as a wide winger on the left to stretch the defense, while Michu operates as an inverted winger on the right to cut inside. Diego Costa acts as a pressing centre-forward to lead the line and pin the last defender. The team looks to use combinations in tight spaces to create runs in behind or deliver a cross from the wide areas to find the striker.

This formation offers significant tactical advantages through numerical superiority in midfield. By packing the central areas, Celta can bypass the midfield of many opponents and create wide overloads when the midfielders push forward. The high press allows the team to win the second ball and launch attacks before the opposition can settle.

The 2-5-3 formation is a high risk, high reward system built for heavy possession and aggressive pressing. It is best suited for games where Celta needs to break down a low block and dominate control of the center of the pitch.
