JVOH guards the goal while a back five maintains a deep defensive block. Ronald De Boer holds the center as the primary ball playing defender, providing leadership and coverage. Van Der Meyde acts as a covering defender, while Chadli or Ola John operates as a right centre back to help win the second ball. On the flanks, Mols or Zyech and Arnautovic or Bryan Ruiz act as attacking wing backs to provide width. These wide defenders must track back to form a narrow defensive block when the team loses the ball, ensuring the opposition cannot play through the center.

The midfield operates as a flat four to squeeze the space between the lines. Myaichi and Promes or Tiendalli form a double pivot to shield the defense, with Myaichi looking to intercept play and Promes or Tiendalli holding the position. In the half spaces, Martin Jol and Tioté or Douglas occupy the left and right attacking midfield roles. Westerveld acts as a lone striker, serving as the focal point for the attack. He is tasked to hold up the ball and wait for the midfielders to join him. The wing backs, Mols or Zyech and Arnautovic or Bryan Ruiz, push up to provide width and deliver crosses into the box. This movement creates runs in behind for the attacking midfielders to exploit. When FC Twente attacks, they look to use the wide areas to stretch the defence and find the feet of the striker or exploit the channels.

One major advantage is the compactness when defending, which makes it very hard for opponents to find passing lanes through the middle.
