AZ Football Formation
Starting Lineup
MARTINS INDI · VAN GAAL · LENS · HASSELBAINK · AVELARDZE · RICKSEN · ROMERO/KRUL · DEMBELE · VLAAR · ALTIDORE · HECTOR MORENOAZ relies on a vertical style of play to catch opponents off guard through a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup focuses on quick transitions and heavy pressure in the middle of the pitch to move the ball into the final third as fast as possible. By pushing many bodies forward, the team seeks to dominate the central areas and create immediate threats when they win the ball back.
Romero or Krul acts as the goalkeeper, sitting behind a very shallow back line of just two central defenders. Vlaar and Hector Moreno operate as the sole pair in the defensive unit, where they must be ready to cover large spaces and step up to intercept long balls. Because there are no full backs, these two central defenders must stay alert to defend against runners in behind, often acting as the last line of defense before the goalkeeper.
The midfield is incredibly crowded to control the center of the pitch. Martins Indi acts as the single pivot to shield the two defenders and win the second ball. Ahead of him, a five man midfield group uses Ricksen and Van Gaal to carry the ball forward, while Dembele works to connect the lines by moving between the defensive and attacking blocks. Avelardze operates as an attacking ten in the hole, pressing aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch and looking to play through the lines.
Attacking the opposition requires the three players upfront to work in close combinations. Hasselbaink acts as the central striker to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. On the flanks, Altidore and Lens act as wide wingers who can either pull wide to stretch the defence or cut inside to find space. This front three aims to pin the last defender and create runs in behind, often looking to hit in behind on the transition to catch a retreating back line.
AZ gains a massive advantage through numerical superiority in midfield, which makes it difficult for opponents to play through the center. The presence of five midfielders allows the team to recycle possession quickly and compress the midfield when they lose the ball. Another strength is the ability to create wide overloads when the wingers and midfielders combine to isolate defenders in one on one situations.
This formation is a high risk, high reward system designed to overwhelm teams in the middle third. It is best suited for games where AZ can exploit a disorganized opposition through rapid vertical passing and intense central pressure.
