Lindenbergh works as a single pivot to deny the pivot and protect the center of the pitch. Heitinga and Vermaelen occupy the central roles to win the second ball and recycle possession in the middle. Ahead of them, Pepe and J. Stam act as two tens in the half-spaces to create chances and break the line. Pepe uses his aggression and pressing intensity to press in pairs and win the ball back high up the pitch. This midfield group connects the defense to the attack by finding the feet of the striker and playing through the lines.

Jan Oblak operates as a lone striker and acts as a pressing centre-forward to force a long ball from the opposition. He works to hold up the ball and lay it off to the incoming midfielders. Pepe and J. Stam look to arrive late into the box to score from second balls. The team builds the attack through the thirds, often using the wide areas to spread wide and stretch the defence. They aim to create combinations in tight spaces to find gaps in the opposition.

This formation offers Ajax numerical superiority in midfield when they move into possession to dominate the center. The team can also use the speed of transition to catch opponents out in open space. Having Pepe and J. Stam in those advanced positions allows for wide overloads if the full backs push up.
