A three-man midfield with a carrier provides the engine for Ajax. Rijkaard sits in a single pivot role to shield the defence and intercept passes. Beside him, Seedorf and Davids act as inverted eights who drive forward with the ball and press aggressively to win it back. Litmanen plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, operating in the half-spaces to connect the midfield and attack. This group links the defence and attack by recycling possession and finding the feet of the attackers.

The attacking front three features Ronald de Boer as a pressing centre-forward who pins the last defender. He is flanked by Overmars and Finidi George, who act as wide wingers that pull wide to stretch the defence. Overmars uses his pace to hit in behind on the transition, while Finidi George looks to cut inside to create central presence. The team builds attacks through combinations in tight spaces, often looking for runs in behind or cutbacks from the byline to find Ronald de Boer.
