Starting Lineup

BARTHEZ · ANGLOMA · MOZER · DESAILLY · DI MECO · DESCHAMPS · SAUZEE · TIGANA · Ab. PELE · WADDLE · PAPIN

Marseille operates with a highly aggressive and vertical identity using a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup is built to overwhelm the opposition through heavy numbers in the final third and rapid transitions. The goal is to pin the opposition back and use high energy to win the ball back high up the pitch.

BARTHEZ starts between the posts to guard the goal. In front of him, the back four functions as a defensive line that must hold a high line to keep the team compact. MOZER and DESAILLY act as the central defenders, with DESAILLY providing great aerial strength and physical presence to win headers. MOZER serves as a ball playing defender to start attacks from the back. DI MECO and ANGLOMA act as full backs, tasked with defending the wide areas and tracking runners while also providing support to the wings.

The midfield is a double pivot consisting of TIGANA and DESCHAMPS. DESCHAMPS acts as the holding player to shield the defence and disrupt opposition play. TIGANA is a carrier who drives forward with the ball to connect the defensive and attacking lines. This pairing works to win the second ball and quickly distribute play to the forwards. They must work hard to cover the spaces left behind when the attackers press the opposition.

Marseille utilizes four attackers to stretch the defence across the pitch. Ab. PELE and WADDLE occupy the wide positions, with Ab. PELE acting as an inverted winger to cut inside and WADDLE looking to cross from wide areas. In the center, SAUZEE and PAPIN work as a dual striker partnership. PAPIN is a prolific finisher known for his clinical movement in the box, while SAUZEE provides the physical presence to hold up the ball. These four forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.

This 4-2-4 formation offers significant tactical advantages, particularly the ability to press high in coordinated waves. By pushing four players forward, Marseille creates wide overloads and forces the opposition into mistakes. The speed of transition is a major strength, as the team can move from a defensive block to an attacking setup in seconds.

The Marseille lineup is built for total attacking dominance and high intensity. This formation is best suited for games where the team needs to break down a low block or overwhelm a weaker opponent through sheer numbers.
