Sporting CP focuses on defensive stability and quick transitions, utilizing a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and deny space in the middle, making the team very hard to break down. The primary goal is to absorb constant pressure and look to hit the opposition on the break once a turnover occurs.

Fofana guards the goal. The defensive unit operates with a back five that stays in a compact block. Hjulmand sits as the left centre-back, while Handel plays as the right centre-back and Gustavo Sá holds the middle. The wide defenders, Trincão as the left wing back and Pedro Gonçalves as the right wing back, must push up to provide width and track back to cover the flanks. This unit works to maintain a narrow defensive block and win the second ball to prevent second phases of attack.

The midfield functions as a bank of four to protect the central areas. Lelo plays on the left side while Fresneda occupies the right. In the center, Inácio and Quaresma act as the two central midfielders. Inácio works to shield the defense and intercept passes, while Quaresma looks to carry the ball forward to connect the defensive and attacking lines. They must work together to compress the midfield and ensure the opponent cannot play through the lines or find space between the units.

Rui Silva acts as a lone striker to lead the front line. He must hold up the ball and wait for support to arrive in tight spaces. Trincão and Pedro Gonçalves are expected to overlap and provide width, often looking to get to the byline and whip it in for the striker. The attack relies on quick transitions to Rui Silva to hit in behind. When the team loses the ball, the front line must press from the front to force a long ball and regain possession quickly.

This formation offers great compactness when defending in a low block. Sporting CP can use the wing backs to create wide overloads in the final third to stretch the defence. Another strength is the ability to defend zonally and use the five defenders to cover the width of the pitch, making it difficult for opponents to find gaps or isolate a single defender.
