STUY operates as the goalkeeper behind a flat back four. HULSHOFF and BLANKENBURG act as the central defenders, with HULSHOFF providing strength in the air and BLANKENBURG looking to cover the space behind. KROL plays as the left back and is expected to push up to provide width, while SUURBIER holds the right side to help manage the defensive line. The unit works together to play out from the back and maintain a high line to compress the pitch.

A three-man midfield controls the center of the park. NEESKENS acts as the central anchor, shielding the defence and recycling possession to keep the rhythm going. HAAN and G. MÜHREN operate as the two interior midfielders, with G. MÜHREN looking to carry the ball forward into the half-spaces while HAAN connects the defensive and attacking lines. This midfield unit is designed to win the second ball and quickly move the play through the thirds to find the attackers.

The attacking front line uses three attackers to stretch the defence. CRUIJFF leads the line as a center forward with his famous ability to drop deep and link up play between the lines. On the flanks, KEIZER and REP act as wide wingers who stay high to pin the opposition full backs. KEIZER often looks to cut inside to create chances, while REP works to spread the play and deliver crosses. This group presses from the front to force a long ball from the opponent.

One major advantage of this Ajax lineup is the ability to create numerical superiority in the midfield through the movement of the interior players. The team also uses the width provided by KROL and the wingers to create overloads on the flanks.
