Ajax focuses on total control through high possession and relentless pressing using a 3-4-3. This formation is built to dominate the ball in the middle third and squeeze the opposition in their own half. By spreading the pitch wide, the team creates passing lanes to move the ball quickly through the lines.

Van der Sar acts as the keeper who plays short from the back to start attacks. The back three consists of Bogarde, Blind, and F. de Boer. Bogarde stays central to win the header and control the area, while F. de Boer and Blind operate as wide centre-backs to cover the channels. Blind often steps into midfield to provide an extra passing option, whereas the unit works to hold a high line to keep the team compact.

The midfield is a heavy three-man engine room with Rijkaard acting as the single pivot to shield the defence. Rijkaard uses his passing range to dictate the tempo and recycle possession. Alongside him, Davids and Seedorf operate in the half-spaces to drive forward with the ball and press aggressively to win it back high up the pitch. Litmanen sits in the hole as an attacking ten behind the striker, connecting the midfield to the front line and looking to arrive late into the box.

Ajax employs three attackers to stretch the defence across the pitch. Overmars and R. de Boer act as wide wingers who hug the touchline to pull the opposition back line apart. Overmars uses his speed to hit in behind on the transition, while R. de Boer looks to cut inside to create numbers in central areas. Kanu acts as the lone striker and target man, tasked to hold up the ball and find the feet of the oncoming players. The front line presses from the front to force a long ball from the opponent.

This Ajax lineup offers massive strength through numerical superiority in the central areas. The ability of Davids and Seedorf to carry the ball forward allows the team to overwhelm the opponent in transition. Furthermore, the combination of wide wingers and overlapping movements creates wide overloads that pin the last defender.

This formation creates a suffocating environment for teams that prefer to play out from the back. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to dominate possession and break down a low block through constant pressure.
