Starting Lineup

Jorgensen · Acheampong · Chalobah · Tosin · Cucurella · Fernandez · Caicedo · Palmer · Neto · Nkunku · Colwill

Chelsea aims to play a vertical and high press game within a 3-4-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and break the line quickly through direct passing. The goal is to use high energy to squeeze the space and force turnovers in the attacking third. By playing with three attackers and a compact midfield, the team looks to dominate the opposition through constant pressure.

Jorgensen acts as the goalkeeper to start the build up from the back. The back line consists of a back three of Chalobah, Tosin, and Colwill. Chalobah plays as the right centre back to cover the wide areas, while Colwill acts as a ball playing defender to progress the ball through the thirds. Tosin sits in the middle to win the header and hold the line. The three defenders work to defend zonally and protect the central area when the team drops into a mid block.

The midfield block consists of four players to control the center of the pitch. Acheampong and Cucurella sit in deeper roles to shield the defense and recycle possession. Caicedo uses his pressing intensity to win the ball back high and disrupt the opponent. Fernandez operates from an advanced position to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Fernandez uses his passing range to find teammates and play through the lines with precision. This group works to compress the midfield and prevent the opponent from playing out from the back.

The attacking front line uses three players to stretch the defense. Nkunku plays as a pressing centre forward who works to pin the last defender. On the flanks, Palmer and Neto provide width and direct threat. Palmer cuts inside from the right to create chances with his dribbling and vision. Neto uses his speed to run in behind the defense and get to the byline. The team attacks in combinations, using the movement of the wingers to create space for Nkunku to arrive late into the box.

One major tactical advantage is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. The front three and the advanced midfielders can trigger a press together to win the ball back high up the pitch. Chelsea also benefits from the ability to create wide overloads. When the wingers pull wide, it creates space for the midfielders to carry the ball forward into the half spaces. This makes it difficult for the opposition to defend the central and wide areas simultaneously.

This 3-4-3 formation provides a high intensity and attacking identity for Chelsea. It is best suited for facing teams that struggle to play out from the back under heavy pressure.
