Starting Lineup

Trossard · Nwaneri · Merino · Rice · Odegaard · Partey · Lewis-Skelly · Timber · Gabriel · Saliba · Raya

Arsenal focuses on a high press to win the ball high up the pitch, operating with a 3-4-3 formation. This lineup is built to dominate the ball and use high intensity to pressure the opposition back line immediately upon losing possession. The goal is to stay compact and control the tempo of the game through aggressive positioning.

Trossard acts as the goalkeeper to start the build up. The back line consists of a back three with Nwaneri, Merino, and Odegaard. Merino and Odegaard act as the wide centre-backs to provide width in the defensive phase, while Nwaneri sits in the middle to command the area. They defend zonally to keep the team compact. The unit functions to squeeze the space between the lines and prevent long balls from finding targets.

The midfield utilizes a four man block to control the center of the pitch. Rice works to shield the defense and break the line with his ball carrying, while Timber works alongside him to recycle possession and link the defense to the attack. Lewis-Skelly plays as a left sided midfielder to help control the tempo, and Partey plays as an attacking ten to connect the lines. This midfield group aims to win the second ball and ensure the team can progress through the thirds.

Arsenal employs three attackers across the front to stretch the defense. Raya operates as a lone striker to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. Saliba plays as an inverted winger on the left to cut inside and create space, while Gabriel works as an inverted winger on the right to pull wide. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition. This movement creates runs in behind and allows the team to attack in combinations through the half spaces.

This 3-4-3 formation provides several tactical advantages. The team can create wide overloads by using the wingers and the midfielders in the same vertical corridor. There is also a high ability to press high in coordinated waves, which puts immense pressure on the opponent. The compact nature of the midfield and back three allows Arsenal to maintain a strong shape when defending in a mid block.

The Gunners use this formation to dominate possession and overwhelm opponents through high intensity pressing. It is a system best suited for games where the team needs to pin the opposition back and control the ball in the final third.
