Latvia National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
Mitre (Arg) (Joan López) · Nardelli (Arg) (Rodríguez) · Aguirre (Arg) (Hernández) · Iriarte (Arg) (Micolta) · Gómez (Coba) · Larotonda (Ven) (S.Caicedo) · Mera (D.Luna) · Oña (Carrasco) · Monti (Arg) (Delgado) · Ushiña (A.Mina) · Molina (Arg) (Lugo)Latvia aims to play a direct and defensive game using a 4-4-2. This formation is built to absorb pressure and use the verticality of the two strikers to move the team up the pitch quickly. The lineup focuses on staying compact to limit space for the opponent.
Mitre stays between the posts to organize the back line. A flat back four forms the foundation of the defense with Nardelli acting as the right back and Gómez covering the left side. Iriarte and Aguirre play as the two central defenders to defend zonally. Iriarte and Aguirre must hold the line and win the header when the opposition sends long balls into the box. The defensive unit works to stay narrow and protect the center of the pitch.
A double pivot provides the base for the midfield. Larotonda and Oña sit in front of the defense to shield the back four and win the second ball. Larotonda works to link the defensive and attacking lines by recycling possession. Ahead of them, Mera and Ushiña operate in the wide areas to support the attack. Mera and Ushiña must track back to help the full backs when the team loses the ball. This midfield unit works to compress the midfield and deny the opposition space between the lines.
The attack relies on a partnership of two forwards. Molina and Monti lead the line to push the opposition back line deep. Molina works to hold up the ball and find the feet of the strikers coming from deep. Monti looks to run in behind the defenders to exploit any space left during a transition. The team uses the width provided by Mera and Ushiña to cross the ball into the box for the two forwards.
Latvia gains a tactical advantage through their compactness when defending in a low block. The double pivot of Larotonda and Oña allows the team to protect the center while Mera and Ushiña can quickly transition to attack. This setup is also effective for creating wide overloads if the full backs push up to support the wingers.
This 4-4-2 formation is built to be defensively solid and strike on the break. It is best suited for games against possession based teams where Latvia can sit deep and counter at pace.
