Starting Lineup

Ledesma · Paulo · M.Quarta · Montiel · Acuña · Castaño · Simon · Pity Martinez · Mastantuono · Colidio · Driussi

River plays with high intensity and verticality in this 4-2-4. This formation is built to pin the opposition back and use a heavy volume of attackers to overwhelm the defensive line. The team focuses on attacking in transition and keeping the ball in the final third to sustain pressure.

Ledesma guards the goal as the team operates with a high line. A zonal line is used where Montiel and Acuña provide the necessary width. Montiel acts as an attacking full back to push high up the pitch, while Acuña can overlap to support the left side. In the center, Paulo and M.Quarta operate as a central pairing. M.Quarta uses his passing range and reading of the game to play out from the back and step up to intercept passes. Paulo provides cover to ensure the line remains secure when the team pushes up. This defensive unit works to squeeze the space and press the goalkeeper to force a long ball.

A double pivot forms the engine of the midfield with Castaño and Simon. This two man midfield is tasked with shielding the defense and recycling possession. Castaño works to win the second ball and carry the ball forward into the middle third. Simon acts as a carrier to connect the defensive line to the front four. Both players must work hard to cover the space left behind when the full backs push up. When the team loses the ball, they look to trigger a press immediately to win it back high up the pitch and prevent counters.

The attack uses two forwards in a partnership with Driussi and Colidio leading the line. Driussi works to hold up the ball and link up play between the lines, while Colidio makes runs in behind to stretch the defense. On the flanks, Mastantuono and Pity Martinez operate as wide wingers. Mastantuono tends to cut inside to create chances, whereas Pity Martinez looks to get to the byline and whip it in. The goal is to create wide overloads and isolate wide players in one on one situations. Forwards will press from the front to force the opposition back line into mistakes.

River finds success through the speed of transition and the ability to press high in coordinated waves. This lineup creates numerical superiority in the final third, making it hard for opponents to defend. The presence of four attackers also allows for wide overloads from overlapping full backs, which stretches the defense and creates gaps in the middle.

This 4-2-4 formation is an aggressive system designed to overpower opponents through relentless attacking. It is best suited for situations where River needs to break down a low block through volume and constant pressure.
