Bologna seeks to play a high intensity game through a 3-3-4 formation. This lineup relies on a heavy press and quick transitions to unsettle the opponent. The team aims to win the ball high up the pitch and push bodies forward to overwhelm the defensive line of the opposition.
In goal, Piccione acts as the last line of defense. The back line operates as a back three, where Iannello plays as the right centre-back and Dama occupies the left centre-back spot. Cassaro sits in the middle to anchor the defense and organize the unit. These three defenders work to keep the space tight and manage the line to prevent through balls. They must be ready to step up to squeeze the space or drop back to cover runs in behind.
The midfield is a three-man midfield with a single pivot. Corso or Gatto sits in the holding role to shield the defense and pick up runners. To the sides, Scolaro or Jantus and Bucalo act as the engine, with the former driving forward with the ball and the latter helping to connect the defensive and attacking lines. This trio works to recycle possession and provide support when the team wins it back high up the pitch.
The attack is heavy with four players across the front. Franchina plays on the right wing to provide width, while Salvo or Locantro occupies the left wing. In the center, Giannaula and La Spada operate as a pair of strikers. They work to pin the last defender and create space for the wide players. The forwards are expected to press from the front to force a long ball and create chances through quick combinations in the final third.
Bologna gains a significant advantage by creating numerical superiority in the attacking zone. By committing four players forward, the team can isolate wide players in one on one situations and create overloads. The coordinated press from the front line makes it difficult for the opponent to build out from the back, allowing the team to win the second ball in dangerous areas.
This formation is built for a high risk, high reward style of play. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to break down a low block through sheer numbers and pressure.
