Pohang Football Formation
Starting Lineup
St (성준) · Rw (상용) · Lw (현우) · Cm (재근) · Cm (시환) · Dm (승기) · Lb (성범) · Rb (동현) · Cb (상엽) · Cb (본정) · Gk (병배)Pohang prioritizes a high press and rapid transitions in their 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and strike quickly before the opposition can settle. By using a heavy attacking front line supported by wide runners, Pohang aims to stretch the defence and create chaos in the final third.
The defensive unit starts with the Gk in goal to organize the back line. The team utilizes a back five that functions as a narrow defensive block to deny central access. The Dm acts as the central anchor of the back three, while the Cb on the left and the Cb on the right provide cover and strength. To provide width, the Lwb and Rwb act as attacking wing backs who push high to support the attack. This unit works together to squeeze the space and ensure there are always enough bodies to defend against counter attacks.
In the center of the pitch, the midfield operates as a double pivot consisting of the Rcm and the Lcm. These two midfielders are responsible for connecting the defensive and attacking lines. The Lcm and Rcm must work hard to press aggressively and win the ball back in a mid-block. When the team has possession, they look to recycle possession through these two players to find the attackers. They also need to track back quickly to assist the back five when the opposition breaks.
The attacking front line uses three attackers across the front to pin the last defender. The St acts as a central presence to hold up the ball and link play, while the Lw and Rw act as wide wingers who look to cut inside and create chances. These wingers often look to isolate a one-on-one wide to beat their marker. When the team transitions, the Lwb and Rwb will overlap the winger to provide crosses into the box. The goal is to create runs in behind and deliver balls to the ST or arriving late into the box from the wide areas.
Pohang gains a significant advantage through the wide overloads created by the wing backs and wingers. This formation also allows for great compactness when defending in a low block. The ability to transition from a compact back five to a heavy attack allows the team to hit opponents on the transition with great speed.
This formation is ideal for a team that wants to dominate the wings and punish opponents through quick vertical movements. It is best suited for matches against teams that leave space behind their full backs.
