Ajax looks to control games through high pressing and quick transitions using a 5-3-2. This formation focuses on dominating the middle of the pitch while using wing backs to provide width. The lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and strike fast before the opposition can settle.

Heinz Stuy stands between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line works as a back three with Edgar Davids acting as a central figure to sweep behind a high line. Frank De Boer plays as a ball playing defender from the right side, while Barry Hulshoff covers the left. The wide defenders, Michael Reiziger and Danny Blind, act as attacking wing backs who push high to provide width. This allows the central trio to stay compact and defend zonally.

The midfield operates with a three man midfield with a carrier to link the lines. Jari Litmanen and Rafael Van Der Vaart occupy the central spaces to connect the defence and attack. Litmanen is known for his vision and ability to play through the lines. Marc Overmars plays as an attacking ten behind the strikers to drive forward with the ball and create chances. This midfield group works to press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch.

The attack features two forwards in a partnership to stretch the defence. Johnny Rep and Patrick Kluivert act as the primary goal threats. Kluivert uses his strength to hold up the ball and link with the midfield, while Rep looks to make runs in behind the last defender. They combine in tight spaces to split the defence with a through ball. The movement of the wing backs allows Overmars to operate in the pockets, creating a constant threat in transition.

Ajax gains a tactical advantage through numerical superiority in the central areas when they press. The wing backs create wide overloads that force the opposition to spread wide, opening gaps in the middle. The ability to press high in coordinated waves allows the team to win the ball back quickly in the final third. This setup makes the team very difficult to play through when they sit in a mid block.

This 5-3-2 formation relies on heavy pressing and rapid verticality to punish mistakes. It is best suited for matches against teams that try to build play slowly from the back.
