The midfield operates as a three man midfield with a carrier to bridge the lines. Soren Lerby sits in front of the defence to shield the back three and win the second ball. Wesley Sneijder works in the left half space to create from deep, using his passing range to find runners. Wim Jon operates on the right to connect the defensive and attacking lines, ensuring the team can recycle possession and switch play effectively.

In the final third, Ajax deploys four attackers to stretch the defence. Brian Laudrup and Nwankwo Kanu act as wide wingers who hug the touchline to provide width. They create space in the middle for the two forwards, Wim Kieft and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who work in a partnership. Ibrahimovic uses his aerial strength and technical ability to hold up the ball, while Kieft looks to make runs in behind or arrive late into the box to finish chances.
