Because there are only two defenders, they must be ready to defend man to man or shift quickly to block passing lanes.

In the center of the pitch, LA Galaxy uses a four man midfield to control the tempo. Miki Yamane and Julian Aude act as a double pivot to shield the two center backs and recover the ball. Miki Yamane and Julian Aude work to press aggressively to win the ball in the middle third. Ahead of them, Lucas Sanabria and Riqui Puig operate in the half spaces to link the play. Riqui Puig uses his exceptional passing range to find teammates and break the line. This grouping allows the team to recycle possession quickly and move the ball from the defensive unit to the front line.

The front four stretch the defense and create constant movement. Diego Fagundez and Joseph Paintsil act as wide wingers who look to get to the byline and whip it in. Marco Reus and Gabriel Pec lead the line as two central forwards. Marco Reus uses his technical quality and vision to link up with the wide players, while Gabriel Pec pushes the opposition back line. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball, allowing the midfield to step up and win the second ball. This attacking unit relies on quick combinations to find gaps in the defense.

This formation offers a major tactical advantage through numerical superiority in the final third. By pushing four players high, LA Galaxy can create wide overloads and pin the last defender. The ability to press high in coordinated waves makes it very difficult for opponents to play out from the back.
