Botafogo plays a highly vertical style of football designed to overwhelm the opposition in the middle third. They use a 2-5-3 formation to dominate the central areas and create constant pressure. This lineup is built to win the ball quickly and move it forward with speed to catch the defense out of position.

Jhon stays between the posts to anchor the back line. The defense relies on a very narrow pair of central defenders, Bastos and Barboza, who must play a high line to keep the team compact. Bastos often plays as a ball playing defender to help play short from the back. Barboza focuses on covering the space behind him and making sure no runners get through the middle. Because there are only two defenders, the unit relies on the midfield to squeeze the space and prevent direct passes.

The midfield is a heavy five man block that controls the tempo. Alex Telles and Vitinho form a double pivot to shield the defense and protect the two central defenders. Marlon Freitas and Gregore act as the central engines, working to win the second ball and carry the ball forward into the attacking third. Savarino plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, looking to find pockets of space between the lines. This central mass allows the team to recycle possession and find ways to break the line through the middle.

In the attacking phase, Botafogo utilizes three players across the front to stretch the opposition. Igor Jesus works as the primary striker to hold up the ball and fight for position against center backs. On the flanks, Santiago Rodriguez and Artur act as wide wingers to provide width and pull defenders away from the center. Santiago Rodriguez looks to cut inside to create overloads, while Artur tries to get to the byline to whip it in. This movement creates space for the midfielders to make runs into the box and arrive late to finish chances.

One major advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in the central areas. By crowding the midfield, Botafogo can press in a mid-block and win it back high up the pitch. They also create wide overloads when the wingers and midfielders combine to isolate defenders in one on one situations. The ability to transition quickly from a central press to an attacking wave makes them very difficult to mark.

This formation is built for an aggressive, high pressing game. It is best suited for matches against opponents who lack the strength to win the second ball in a crowded midfield.
