Starting Lineup
Ferdinand/BILIC · TERRY/SONG · ZABALETA/ARBELOA · EVRA/JOHNSON/BRIDGE · CARRICK · MASCHERANO/SOLANO · LAMPARD/JOE COLE/NASRI · LJUNGBERG/SHERINGHAM/PAYE · TEVEZ/BORRIELLO/DEFOE · SUKER/DI CANIO/BENNI · LAMA/AREOLA/JAMES/HARTWest Ham aim to overwhelm opponents through a heavy central presence using a 2-6-2 formation. This lineup is built to dominate the ball in the middle third and create massive numbers in the attacking zones. By crowding the center, West Ham look to control the tempo and squeeze the space available to the opposition.
James Areola stands between the posts to guard the goal. Ahead of him, the defensive unit consists of a narrow back two with Bilic and Terry acting as central defenders. Bilic provides aerial strength and physical presence while Terry acts as the leader to organize the line and cover space. This very small defensive unit must stay highly disciplined to prevent being caught out by long balls or quick transitions.
The midfield is a massive block of six players designed to control every inch of the central area. Zabaleta plays as a deep lying midfielder on the left to help protect the two defenders. Beside him, Johnson operates as the right defensive midfielder to shield the back line. In the center, Mascherano works to break up play and win the second ball while Carrick sits deep to recycle possession and find teammates. Further forward, Lampard drives the ball forward with his trademark late runs into the box. Ljungberg operates on the left side of this group to provide energy and carry the ball into the final third.
The attacking unit relies on two strikers to finish the work done by the massive midfield. Defoe plays as the left striker to press the opposition back line and find pockets of space. He works alongside Suker, who acts as a partner to link up play between the lines and hold up the ball. This two man front line relies on service coming from the high numbers in the middle to create chances through combinations.
This formation offers significant numerical superiority in midfield to control games. The heavy presence of players like Mascherano and Carrick allows the team to dominate possession and tire the opponent. Another strength is the ability to create goalscoring chances through the late arrivals of Lampard into the attacking zone.
West Ham use this heavy midfield presence to suffocate teams that try to play through the center. It is a formation best suited for games where they need to dominate the ball and pin the opponent into their own half.
