Standard Football Formation
Starting Lineup
CIMAN · OCHOA/KAWASHIMA · FRED/DANTE · MANGALA · OPARE · WITSEL · VAN BUYTEN · FELLAINI · BATSHUAYI · BENTEKE · DEFFOURStandard aims to dominate through sheer verticality and aggressive attacking numbers in a 2-4-4. This lineup is built to overwhelm the opposition by pushing many bodies into the final third to create chaos. The goal is to hit the opponent hard and use the physical presence of the players to force mistakes.
OCHOA/KAWASHIMA sits between the posts to command the area. In front of the goalkeeper, the defensive unit operates with a very high line featuring a central pairing of FRED/DANTE and CIMAN. These two central defenders must be ready to step up to compress the space and catch runners offside. Because there are only two defenders, they rely on each other to cover space and win headers when long balls are played.
The midfield acts as a central engine room with a double pivot of WITSEL and VAN BUYTEN. WITSEL provides a calm presence to recycle possession and find the next pass, while VAN BUYTEN works to win the second ball and break up play. On the flanks, OPARE and MANGALA act as wide midfielders who provide the width. OPARE and MANGALA push high to support the attack and help the front four, making sure the team stays compact when they try to win the ball back high up the pitch.
The attacking unit is extremely heavy with four players across the front. FELLAINI and DEFFOUR occupy the wide positions, with FELLAINI often looking to use his aerial strength and DEFFOUR looking to create through quick movement. In the center, BENTEKE and BATSHUAYI operate as two central forwards. BENTEKE acts as a physical presence to hold up the ball, while BATSHUAYI looks to play off him and find space in the box. This front line focuses on attacking the near post and far post in quick combinations to punish any defensive lapse.
Standard offers massive power in the air and extreme offensive density. The combination of BENTEKE and FELLAINI makes the team a huge threat on crosses and set pieces. Furthermore, the aggressive positioning of the wide players allows the team to create wide overloads and pin the opposition back in their own half.
This 2-4-4 formation is a high risk, high reward way to play that relies on winning duels and physical dominance. It is best suited for games where the team needs to score quickly or overwhelm a side that sits deep in a low block.
