Chelsea aim to dominate the pitch through a relentless high press and verticality, utilizing a 2-4-4 formation to overwhelm the opposition. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and strike quickly before the opponent can settle. By pushing many bodies forward, Chelsea attempt to pin the last defender and create chaos in the final third.

Robbert Sanchez acts as the lone goalkeeper behind a very aggressive central defensive pairing. Colwill and Fofana form a two man back line that stays high to squeeze the space and maintain a high line. Because there are no full backs in this specific formation, Colwill and Fofana must be prepared to cover large areas of ground and step up to intercept passes. They must be strong in one on one situations as they will often find themselves isolated against counter attacks if the midfield fails to track back.

The midfield functions as a central block designed to control the tempo and protect the two centre backs. James sits in the defensive midfield role to shield the defence and win the second ball. Beside him, Enzo operates to connect the defensive and attacking lines, using his passing range to switch play. Caicedo provides energy to press aggressively to win the ball high, while Cucurella works as a left central midfielder to drive forward with the ball and support the attack.

In the final third, the team uses a front four to stretch the defence. Sancho and Palmer act as wide attackers, with Sancho hugging the touchline and Palmer looking to cut inside to create chances. Nkunku and N Jackson operate as a pair of forwards, with N Jackson using his pace to make runs in behind while Nkunku works to link up play between the lines. This attacking unit is designed to attack in combinations, moving the ball quickly to find pockets of space.

This 2-4-4 formation offers Chelsea significant numerical superiority in the attacking zones, making it difficult for opponents to defend the wide areas and the center simultaneously. The ability to press in coordinated waves allows the team to regain possession quickly in dangerous areas. Furthermore, the presence of multiple runners allows for rapid transitions that catch the opposition out of position.

The Chelsea lineup is a high risk, high reward system centered on aggressive pressing and rapid attacking transitions. It is best suited for games where the team needs to break down a low block or overwhelm an opponent through sheer offensive volume.
