Starting Lineup

ARIAS · MARTIRENA · DI CESARE · COLOMBO · ROJAS · ZUCULINI · NARDONI · ALMENDRA · SOLARI · VIETTO · MARTINEZ

Racing Club relies on a strong defensive base and rapid transitions, utilizing a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to sit in a mid-block and wait for the opponent to lose possession before hitting them in behind. The team looks to protect the central areas while keeping enough bodies back to stop being broken on the counter.

ARIAS stands between the posts to command his area. The defensive unit operates as a back five where ZUCULINI sits centrally to win the second ball and guide the line. DI CESARE and COLOMBO act as the side center-backs to cover the space behind the wide players. MARTIRENA and ROJAS act as attacking wing backs to provide width and stretch the defence. When the team is under pressure, these wing backs drop back to form a narrow defensive block that is difficult to pass through.

NARDONI and ALMENDRA form a two-man midfield that must cover huge amounts of ground. This pairing links the defensive line to the front three. ALMENDRA often works to shield the defence and pick up runners, while NARDONI has the license to carry the ball forward and progress the play. They focus on winning the ball back high up the pitch or recycling possession to find the wide attackers.

In the final third, MARTINEZ leads the line as a central striker. He works to pin the last defender and hold up the ball to allow his teammates to join the attack. On the flanks, SOLARI and VIETTO act as wide attackers who look to cut inside and find space in the box. VIETTO uses clever movement to find gaps, while SOLARI looks to get to the byline and deliver early crosses. The wing backs, MARTIRENA and ROJAS, overlap the wingers to create overloads in the wide areas.

This formation gives Racing Club a clear advantage in transition. By using five defenders, the team maintains compactness when defending. The ability of MARTIRENA and ROJAS to push high means the team can quickly switch play and isolate wide players in one on one situations. These wide overloads force the opposition to shift and leave gaps in the middle.

The 5-2-3 formation offers a balance between defensive stability and attacking width. It is best suited for games against teams that hold a lot of possession, allowing Racing Club to sit deep and strike with pace.
