Starting Lineup

Danso · Lienhart · Posch · Laimer · Lazaro · Schlager · Seiwald · Arnautovic · Baumgartner · Sabitzer · Lucic

Austria aims to play a high press with rapid transitions, utilizing a 3-4-3 formation to control much of the pitch. This lineup focuses on winning the ball back high up the pitch to catch opponents out of position. The team works to stretch the defence by using wide players to create space for central runners.

Lucic sits between the posts to command his area. The defensive unit operates as a back three, where Posch acts as the right centre-back to provide stability. Danso plays as the left centre-back, using his aerial strength to defend set pieces and clear the lines. Lienhart occupies the central role, acting as a ball playing defender who can play short from the back to start attacks. This back three must stay compact to prevent through balls while being ready to step up to set the offside trap.

The midfield operates with a central pairing that provides a strong base for the team. Seiwald and Schlager form a central duo that works to squeeze the space in the middle. Seiwald focuses on winning the second ball and shielding the defence, while Schlager works to carry the ball forward and connect the defensive and attacking lines. On the flanks, Laimer and Lazaro act as wide midfielders who provide much needed width. They must track back to help the defenders when out of possession and push high to support the attack.

In the final third, Austria uses three attackers to pin the last defender. Arnautovic acts as the lone striker and a target man, using his physical presence to hold up the ball and win headers. On the wings, Sabitzer and Baumgartner play as inverted wingers who cut inside to create goal scoring chances. This movement creates space for Laimer or Lazaro to overlap the winger and deliver crosses. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.

One major advantage for Austria is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the front three and wide midfielders to hunt the ball. The formation also offers the chance to create wide overloads when the wingers move inside and the wide midfielders push high. This makes it difficult for the opposition to defend both the middle and the flanks simultaneously.

This 3-4-3 formation relies on high intensity and physical strength to dominate games. It is best suited for facing teams that try to build play slowly from the back.
